Access Nature

Every OTSDR project is designed to draw the gap between you and nature closer, Project 02 is no exception. Hand made in the Lake District with Atom Packs. Explore the process behind the collaboration.

From a farm in Keswick, Lake District, UK, exists two independently minded brands, Atom Packs and OTSDR. Across the courtyard Atom Packs make their ultra lightweight backpacks, dedicated to the pursuit of life on the trail. On the other side of the yard is OTSDR Studio, sharing a space that is surrounded by rolling Lakeland mountains and valleys.

The common vision is one of accessing nature in the simplest way, for Atom Packs that’s carrying what you need and not a ounce more on your back for multiple days on the trail, and for OTSDR that’s exploring ways we can go from our everyday life to a place of nature (park, trail, hill) without boundaries. Nature should be accessible for all.

The Question
Can we make a bag that truly answers the question of duality, existing in the space between urban and nature, style and functionality?

The Process
Over the last 6 months Tom (Atom Packs founder and visionary) and myself (OTSDR) have been developing a side bag that can adapt between environments, exploring the balance between functionality, aesthetics and purpose.

Process has been key to this product, amplified by the access to Atom Packs workshop, creating and tweaking prototypes on the fly. Over time we shaped a product that answered the question. Watching each bag being made in front of you by a team of experienced makers is something that elevated this project to another level for OTSDR. Tapping into years of knowledge meant the Transition Pack was built to its highest possible spec.

The Bag
The shape and size was always the most important starting point of the bag, it has to be small enough but also big enough at the same time, visually on point as well as functionally sound, and my vision was always a technical sling bag, they are streamlined enough to fit into the city but also versatile enough to carry provisions for ½ a day outside.

Several samples were made, exploring the pocket formations on the outside that is now dubbed the ‘MTN Pocket’ for its mountain type shape and its ability to expand and hold a water bottle, camera lens, hats, and anything else really you can cram into it, a key feature of a utility product.

The fabrics are key to answering the form vs function question. Choosing high-spec fabrics blended with the right colours mean that the bag is lightweight, highly durable, looks rad and performs in multiple environments.

Placed around the bag are labels that tell the story of the collab, drawing the user closer to the product and closer to nature. Creating meaning beyond a product is something that drives OTSDR products to feel more like an experience and this project was no different.

Advance into nature.
A place with no boundaries.
All are welcome.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
